The Unity sculpture is modelled on the Godwit. They preform the lowest nonstop flight of any non-seabird, and unlike seabird, there is no chance of an inflight snack. Godwits hold cultural significance for many New Zealanders. Once paired, they form monogamous bonds, they don’t spend the non breeding season together, but always return to each other every year. For Maori they were birds of mystery, and were believed to accompany spirits of the departed.
